Cognitive rehabilitation

Cognitive rehabilitation is the process of recovering abilities that are lost as a result of changes in memory and thinking skills due to a neurological condition.

In some cases, it is possible to directly improve our mental processes and try to get them back to how they were functioning before a brain injury. However, much of the time it is about recognising that these mental abilities will always be areas of difficulty, but that it is possible to minimise their impact on day-to-day life through various strategies.

Gray Matter Neuropsychology Services is able to offer a range of cognitive rehabilitation interventions:
  • Neuropsychological assessment to identify the mechanism underlying your cognitive difficulties;
  • Brain injury education services to help you better understand how your neurological condition is impacting on your thinking skills;
  • Help to identify factors other than your brain injury (e.g. medication, fatigue, mental health, pain) that may be impacting on your memory and thinking skills, and guidance around how to improve this;
  • Guidance around whether your cognitive difficulties are likely to benefit from cognitive remediation therapy (also known as ‘brain training’ tasks), and advice around the most evidence-based programmes and interventions;
  • Guidance around assistive technology and how this can minimise the impact of your cognitive difficulties on day-to-day life;
  • Guidance around environmental adaptations in the home or workplace that can reduce the impact of your cognitive difficulties on your level of independence and performance;
  • Multidisciplinary team working with other professionals such as Occupational Therapists (OT) and Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) to improve the likelihood that their cognitive rehabilitation interventions will be successful.
